My name is Timothy Coolidge, and I’m the Design Director within the Puzzle Studio at Rovio Entertainment, headquartered in Espoo, Finland. My role is working with all the designers in the studio, including the UX designers, to make sure the team is doing their best work and growing in the areas where they want and need to. While there is much uncertainty in the world, Rovio is fortunate enough to be looking for more game lovers to join our team!
I moved to Finland and joined Rovio after working in the United States in AAA console and mobile games – everything from FPS to RTS to F2P online games. I wanted an opportunity to take what I’d learned in mobile design and further hone my craft, with the ultimate goal of leading a team that would always put players first. After being at Rovio for only a few months, I discovered a great surprise – the culture here is one of a kind. The team at Rovio is ambitious and intensely passionate without the ego, which I find to be a very difficult balance in most places.
There’s a lot more going on at Rovio than you might realize. When you think of Rovio, the classic Angry Birds slingshot mechanic surely comes to mind. But the Puzzle Studio has released a variety of unique games over the past few years, like Angry Birds Match, Angry Birds Pop, Angry Birds Dream Blast, and Sugar Blast. There’s more at Rovio than the Angry Birds brand, too, including a variety of new IPs currently in development that we’re really excited about.
Our studio is focused on creating puzzle games that are instantly fun, but that can also turn into years-long adventures. We’re exploring new ways to use narrative and characters in casual mobile games, with the aim of creating a true emotional connection that stays with players even when they’re not playing.
Outside of the Puzzle team, Rovio has two other studios – Battle Studio, which focuses on making accessible and social strategy and action games, and Stockholm Studio, which, in addition to being the home studio of Angry Birds 2, specializes in building character-driven RPGs. All three studios are diverse and filled with established veterans from the video game industry who work together to make Rovio the great place that it is. There is some cool stuff coming from each of these teams that the world will hear about soon.
We’re looking for people who have a passion for mobile games and a desire to be part of a team that’s building something special. Whether your experience is in gameplay capture, level design, video editing, marketing, graphic design, or you just want to make great games, we’re interested in hearing from you! To answer some obvious questions you may have: yes, we are hiring right now, yes, jobs can begin remotely, and yes, Rovio covers the costs and logistics of those that move to work at our Helsinki or Stockholm offices.
